Why I Believe in Biblical Creation

A Letter to a Skeptic
Dearest Shawnee,
I’m glad to hear you’re doing well! Everything’s great with my family too – we’ve already adjusted to our new home, and I can’t wait to tour you around here in the Summer when you come and visit. I miss you very much already!
I’m sorry that my reply took a while to send; your last letter had a lot of great questions, and I had to do my best to answer them the best I can. I appreciate your honesty and openmindedness, and the fact that you are trusting me to give you genuine answers means a lot to me.
Yes, you are right: I do believe in the Creation Theory, which means that I believe that an Almighty God created everything in the span of six days. I know that this sounds absurd, and I can understand where you’re coming from – in school, we were taught that the Big Bang and Evolution were the real things that kickstarted life after all! However, as I grew in my Christian faith and as I did more research, it only became more obvious to me that the Creation Theory holds the truth of the world’s origins. In this letter, I’ll do my best to answer your question in your last letter about why I believe in the Creation Theory.
The Logic of Creation
Firstly, I know that you’re taking advanced science classes, so let me ask you: with the earth’s specific tilt, the formula for gravity, the air pressure weighing around us – you can’t look me in the eye and tell me that these are all the products of accidental trial-and-error! You don’t even need a background in science to realize this; just look around you! The way flowers bloom, the way your heart beats out blood every minute, and the way the animal kingdom cycles: isn’t it more absurd to think that there isn’t an intelligent mind behind all of this? Just like how your favorite leche flan points to your talented mother’s secret recipe, the complex design of the world points to an intelligent Creator – in fact, this is the logic that the Christian Bible goes by. The first two verses of the Bible say, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, and the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep” (Genesis 1:1-2) Another verse says, “All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:3). The Christian Bible, which is the first account of the world, is consistent in the narrative of a Creator, and because “all of the Bible is reliable”, this makes the Creator narrative reliable too (2 Timothy 3:16). So, the first two reasons explaining why I believe in the Creation Theory are that both the Bible and the world echo the existence of a Creator.
Divine Revelation
Now, I know that this all sounds absurd. A divine magical being just speaks the world into existence? All of the universe just created in under a week? What about the fossils? How is this possible? I get it – I once had these same questions too! However, you must know that one can only really understand and believe in the Creation Theory if he/ she is guided by the Holy Spirit. And no – this is not some kind of superstitious spirit that your grandma would warn you about! I’m talking about the Creator Himself guiding you and revealing to you the parts that He wants to reveal to you. In fact, the Holy Spirit is the very reason why the Bible is consistent in talking about a Creator. I also like to think that the Holy Spirit is the reason why over the past century, many atheist scientists have also converted and rose up to defend the Creation Theory with scientific truths. I can name many, many Evolutionary principles refuted by many, many Creationists, but that’s a conversation for another time. Besides, apart from scientific back-up, faith is a crucial role in one’s acceptance of the Creation Theory. There are many skeptics that, no matter how clearly they’ve lost the debate, will remain adamant in their belief that there is no Creator because they refuse to make way for this possibility. In fact, one scientist from Harvard, Richard Lewontin, even admitted, “We take the side of evolution in spite of the patent absurdity of some of its constructs… because we have a prior commitment to materialism.” Just like the strongest winds are not enough to shake a mountain down, the strongest scientific refutes are not enough to convince a person to believe in the Creation Theory if that person has not placed his/ her faith or belief in the Creator.
A Reason for Atheism
“Hang on, Ruth Ann,” you might be asking, “so, who exactly is this Creator? Why is he so important?” Now Shawnee, the Creator is important because He is God! Because He created the universe, the world, and the rest of us, He rightfully gets the titles “King” and “Master of All”. The very prospect of a Creator means that we humans are under His rule, and that we must follow His commandments no matter what – He created us, after all, so He alone knows what’s best for us. If God did not create the world as He had said in the Bible, then wouldn’t all His commands be useless? Wouldn’t that no longer make Him the King and Master of all, because if He did not create us, then we do not fall under His rule? Wouldn’t that make all the rest of His promises lies then, because He had lied about creating the world? One of these promises is the fact that He sent His own Son to the world to die and save us from eternal death (I’ll get back to this later). If God had lied about creating the world and if He truly does not have the power to create the world as He wishes, then wouldn’t His promise of His Son be meaningless as well? These are the reasons why most skeptics of the Creation Theory are those who refuse to believe in God. We humans are inherently selfish and proud, and the prospect of being ruled over by a Master is plain unthinkable. But in our pursuit to run away from God, we end up being ruled over by something else: money, Korean dramas, a boyfriend or a girlfriend, others’ opinions, or one’s self. The truth is, we will always be ruled over by something, and we are given the freedom to choose who our master will be. The thing is, are we going to choose something that makes us feel good for a short amount of time or are we going to choose our Creator who knows what’s best for us?
An Epic Love Story
This is why many Christian scientists are working hard to defend the Creation Theory. Evolution, which has become so popular and accepted over the years, is the greatest attack we’ve seen on Christianity: it undermines the power of God and calls Him a liar, and if God was a liar about Creation, then He’s also likely a liar about the rest of His Word. God’s Word has the central theme of redeeming us from our sins – from our wrong deeds that separate us from God and lead us into eternal death. But a verse in the Bible says, “For God so loved the world that He sent His only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16), and the idea of Evolution keeps us from this truth! There is nothing we can do to escape our fate of eternal death, but God Himself sent His Son to take our punishment in our place and free us of our fate, that way, we can go and have a relationship with our Creator. Think of it as case in court: we have committed a crime so grave that the death penalty is the only solution, but the Judge Himself sends His own Son to take the death penalty for us so that we can be pardoned from our sentence. Isn’t that so amazing? The very God who created us is the same God who wants to be with us! The very God who put the stars in the sky and planted the world’s forests loves and cares about us so much, that He’s willing to sacrifice His Son for us! I don’t know about you, but I don’t think Romeo and Juliet, Titanic, or any other love story could top God’s love for us! It’s a very passionate and radical kind of love that changed my life, and it could change yours too, if you make the choice to accept the Creator into your life as your Lord and Savior. I just want to add that, no matter what you choose, whether you accept Him or not, I still love you as a friend and that God’s lifechanging offer to you still stands, but honestly, I’ve never met a single person who’s regretted following God wholeheartedly before.
